Excerpt 3

“Can you determine why the chatter quieted down?” Commander Bailey never cracked a smile while in uniform. Then again, neither did I.
“Sir, no sir, I’ve narrowed some activity up north, I’ll confirm more over the next several hours.”
“These bastards have something up their sleeve.”

“Yes sir, I concur. A stockpile of arms and ammunition is coming to them from somewhere. I believe they are waiting for more attacks until they have their stash successfully delivered.”

“Keep me posted.” The commander turned, leaving before I had a chance to return salute.

Spending hours decoding and working intelligence had moments of tedious boredom. But, gleaning information was my specialty. I established some cred when I rerouted a unit of troops away from a suddenly hot situation. They knew I watched their backs, launching my role as guardian.

“Guardian!” The voice boomed through my headset.

“What can I do for you?”
“I want hot pizza and cold beer.”

“So does every other person deployed. How about you try reality?”
“I thought with your super Spidey skills you could make anything happen?”

“Don’t I wish? I’m awesome, but, not incredibly awesome.” Joking around became easier, because we shared a stressful situation. I’d never really joked around in my life.
“Do you still have some cookies or something? We know you keep a stash. Everything is color coded and alphabetized. You even sorted the M & Ms into separate boxes. You gotta be a girl under that uniform.”

“No way, men have OCD too, it isn’t a women’s only bathroom.”
Silence.

“Bro, I made a joke, wasn’t it funny?”
tatic answered my question. “Umm, yeah, you’re funny. I get it, a women only bathroom. It’s like a port a potty everyone can use. Now, that’s funny.”

“Speaking of bathrooms, have you made it to the kitchen?” We spoke in code, trying to stay one step ahead of the spies listening to our transmissions.

“Hell’s kitchen? Yeah, hated it. Made me want pizza and beer.”

Pizza and beer let me know the guys needed supplies upon their return to command post. I didn’t know how they survived living out on the streets. I just knew I admired them for it. “Copy, over.” We limited our communications when we expected a horrible surprise. Something was going on and I had to figure out the details before someone got hurt.

I wasn’t sure military life was for me. I realized my limitations in street skills hindered working in intelligence. The unit reminded me often I was hired for my looks not my brains. After a few times hearing that same line, I understood it was a joke. I picked apart the pieces of endless conversation among unseen enemies, an asset not just anyone could decipher. My staunch determination and meticulous thought process assisted me when others bored or tired of the mind fuck.
I could handle the mind fuck for hours on end. I was the Guardian for damn good reasons.

The guys wandered in cautiously, fatigue cloaked their weary bodies. Slowly, they stripped off helmets, weapons, holsters, and other necessary staples of war. I waited to speak until they sat down, silent sighs escaping into the word clouds, visible to only me, above their heads.
“I have some cookies and jerky.”

“Hot damn, you are the Guardian.” Perspiration, black greasepaint, and a tired smile covered Michael’s face. “Throw those bitches over here!”
I ran down his bio- Michael Shaffer, age twenty-eight, third tour, hailed from Oklahoma, skilled marksman, special ops.

I knew everything about each member of the elite team.
Michael talked to me before anyone else cared to know me. After I proved my value, I became the honorary ops member, always there in spirit. The guys knew I’d be almost worthless out in the field. I didn’t have that warrior’s instinct.

“You share those bitches with the team. I don’t play favorites. I gotta help save all your asses.”
Deep, testosterone laden laughter rumbled from the crew. “Boy, you’re making jokes all the time now. Before you know it, you’ll be asking us for girl advice.”

“Girl advice?”
“You know, how to get a girl?”

“I don’t know about that. I don’t have time for a girl.” Prisha’s tinkling laughter invaded my brain.

“You think you can hide something from us? We know you got a filly you’ve taken a shine to.”

“A shine? You guys don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You might be the Guardian, but, we’re special ops. We watch you just like you watch us.”

“I hope you always will.” I said an honest thing without giving my first and only crush away.

“Okay, you might be the Guardian, but, you’re sure a dorky ass.”

“It takes all kinds.” I threw a package of beef jerky to the group, diverting their attention like dogs with a bone. They just thought they could outwit me. Maybe on another day.

·         An explosion went off in the center of the market, followed by four more in rapid succession. The entire village became a chaos driven mob, dropping bags, baskets, and anything slowing them down. People screamed, dragging limp bodies to non-existent shelter. Crying children clung to whoever they were closest to. Some people pushed them off their legs, not wanting the weight to slow them down.

“What the fuck?” The unimaginable happened, with me there to witness it.

The value of human life diminished in a matter of intense seconds. How could I save the  one life I began to cherish the most? Oh, God, I think I’ve been hit.
Davee Jones –What is the first book that you published? My first book published was, ironically, not the first book I wrote. On Ellicott Street – a feisty, loving, cougar romance novella- holds the honor of being my first published book. Finless, released second, was the result of years of blood, sweat, and tears. It’s a dark dance balancing between love, desire, and anger. I have 12 total releases so far between my adult moniker and my YA moniker, Allee Mae.

My ideal reader allows me to take them to the edge of sanity, push limits, and support a sometimes simple protagonist just trying to get by in life. I have the same type characters in my explicit writing as well as my sweet or YA books-they just don’t use the “F” word or engage in overt sexuality. It doesn’t always take erotic descriptors of body parts/functions to get a point across. But, I will bring out the sexy when a mature story requires it. (wink)

My newest series takes a twist on fantasy football and dating clubs. Split the Uprights is book one of the Fantasy League series. Books two and three are also available- A Game of Inches and Personal Fouls

Quote From Book:

“I realize you live in a world of certain parameters, so to speak. It’s like always eating cake without frosting. One day you try frosting and cake eating arrives to a whole new level of fabulous. Maybe you should add some icing, Eugene.” – Lola Fontaine

 Excerpt

As the jet begins its descent, Shae turns from the window and looks at him. “Now are you going to tell me where we are?”

Nick holds up his finger. “Patience. I said when we land.”

His breath catches as she rolls her eyes and laughs, soft and silky, warming him in the cool cabin. He didn’t think it was possible for her to be more beautiful than she already is. Her face flushes and eyes sparkle with excitement, matching the hint of glitter across her bare shoulders completely exposed with her hair in loose curls behind her head. He would take a beating just to taste the soft, sweet skin at the base of her neck.

At the bump of the landing gear rolling across the runway she looks back at him again. “We’ve landed. Tell me!”

“We’re slightly northeast of wine country. I read an article in one of the business journals about a man from Indiana re-opening his grandfather’s winery. I thought we could check it out before he launches.”

“Oh, I love it. I can’t wait.”

Once the pilots open the door and disembark, Max and the two security men accompanying them file out. She starts to stand up, but he puts his hand on her arm. Loathe to rouse any uncertainty, he attempts a casual tone. “Just a minute, sweetness. Let Max take care of things first.”

Two black SUVs sit on the tarmac with a young woman wearing a navy blazer standing next to them. Max talks to her as the other two men open the doors and inspect the interiors. A slight frown darkens Shae’s angelic face, his stomach clenching at her anxiety.

“Is everything okay?”

It’s just a precaution. I don’t want anything to ruin our day.”

Her lips curl into a smile, and she squeezes his hand, releasing some of his tension. “Nothing will.”

After the inspection is complete, Max signs the woman’s clipboard and takes the keys from her. Nick pulls Shae up from her seat and leads her down the steps. “Let’s go.”

They drive along the countryside with Max and his team following behind. Tall trees border farm fields, separating them by owner or crop. A few stray clouds float above the distant mountains, no barrier to the abundant sunshine.

Resting her head against the seat, she turns to him. “How did you arrange for us to have such beautiful weather?”

“I’m good at charming angels.”

She laughs and shakes her head. “You’re still as slick as the day I met you.”

He brings her hand to his mouth and kisses each knuckle. Somehow she saw past his arrogance and gave him chance. And, somehow he’s lucky to earn more even when he fucks up. “You’re still as beautiful.”

“What am I going to do with you?”

“Love me.”
