“Hey baby, are you all right?” he asked, stroking her back. In answer she pulled back to kiss him, not wishing to answer in case she totally broke down.

Finally Dan broke the lock. “Are you okay?” he asked again.

“Fine,” she told him, the tears streaming down her face belying her words. “I love you so much.”

“I love you too,” he told her, a frown beginning to form.

“No matter what happens, I love you.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Can we go to bed?”

“Sure,” he replied, the baffled frown remaining. He pulled away and went over to where she had been sitting to pick up her bag. “What did you mean, no matter what happens?” he asked her as they walked to the lift. Stacie cursed her blabbermouth for fore-warning him.

“I want you,” she told him, waiting for the lift doors to close before pressing her body up against his, and stroking her hands down his chest.

“I want you too, but what has happened?”

“Nothing.” Stacie hated the fact she was lying, and she knew he knew she was lying, but maybe she could hold off his curiosity long enough. “I missed you loads.”

“I missed you too,” he said. The lift door opened and they held hands tightly as they walked down the corridor for a short while. Dan stopped at a door and swiped his key card. He opened the door for Stacie to enter first. The room was cosy, and homely decorated. A large pine bedstead dominated, complemented by chunky pine furniture and a small two-seater sofa. Dan closed the door behind her. Stacie took off her jacket, then turned and threw herself at him. Dan took a step backward, steadying himself as he held her.

Stacie took hold of his face in her hands, stroking his stubbled cheeks. She stared at him, drinking in the beloved features, currently wrinkled in puzzlement. She kissed him gently, feeling the movement of his lips beneath hers as he kissed her back. How could the simple movement of his lip muscles make her feel so safe? She buried her fingers in his hair, kissing all over his face, never wanting to stop.
